Frequently Asked Questions

Question:
I am afraid to go to a finance course because I do not want the instructor to call on me in class. Do the instructors call on people to embarrass them in class?

Answer:
It is the policy of Conway Consulting to build students up and not tear them down in public. Therefore, no student is called on in class. Students always work in groups and report back their results in groups.

Question:
How would Lucian rewrite this sentence to reflect plain English?

"The results exclude the mark-to-market effect of non-managed hedges which was a $1
million after-tax gain in this year's quarter and a $5 million after-tax gain in the
2001 quarter."

Answer:
"The reported results exclude the effect of the change in market value (using mark-to-market accounting) of certain trading floor financial agreements (non-managed hedges). The result of these changes was a $1 million and $5 million dollar gain in the second quarter of 2001 and 2002 respectively."

On complex issues I prefer to communicate to two audiences—average investors and financial experts. My version captures both groups.

This is just a quick response so I am offering a disclaimer. I predict you do not get any "takers" because financial groups are still in control of this terminology. Until the investors and the government get their act together on communication, or until I have taught all the communication team members in the country, I fear you will have a tough challenge to make much headway. But that doesn’t mean we cannot try our best.

Question:
Your course offerings look great, but are you able to customize them to meet my needs?

Short Answer:
Yes

Long Answer:
All courses offered by Conway Consulting can (and normally are) customized in at least five ways:
-By industry
-By company
-By region
-By discipline
-By issue or topic

By industry means that if you are in the natural gas business (for example) the course(s) would be customized for the gas industry. Financial comparisons would be made with other natural gas companies, including your closest competitors.

By company means that we would use your financial ratios, your annual report, and your publicly stated goals and strategies to explain what your company is doing, where it is going, how it stacks up against your competitors, how it is viewed by investors and analysts, etc.

By region means that most competitive issues presented will be based on other companies in your same geographic region, but not necessarily all in your industry.

By discipline means that the course(s) would be targeted for specific groups within your company. In keeping with our example of a natural gas company, you might target your distribution group, or the bargaining units (unions) within the distribution group.

By issue or topic means that clients can request specific items be included in the course(s). An example might be a new business model that the company is introducing. We would incorporate this information into the course(s) and will compare and contrast the old method with the new one. Any number of topics can be added to a course as long as they match the basic theme of the course. Therefore, if you have specific items you want taught, we will teach them.
